V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - RACES 9 & 10
IPSWICH 300, QUEENSLAND RACEWAY, IPSWICH, QUEENSLAND
Date: April 30-May 2, 2010
Circuit: Queensland Raceway
Race Format: 1 x 120-kilometre race tomorrow, 1 x 200-kilometre race on Sunday
As part of a long day of trials, testing and troubleshooting, Ford Performance Racing (FPR) gave their upcoming enduro drivers their first taste of the FPR Falcons at Willowbank Raceway in Ipswich today.
Enduro recruits Luke Youlden and James Moffat strapped themselves in for several laps at the Queensland circuit in the lead up to the championship's endurance races later this year.
Youlden, who has already driven several endurance races for FPR, found a new ride in Mark Winterbottom's Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon and was instantly impressed.
It's been four months since I've been behind the wheel of one of these so it was pretty awesome to strap back in!" Youlden exclaimed.
"We were lucky this weekend to get two full half-hour sessions instead of the usual one ... the car feels very different to the Falcon Frosty drove last year - in a better way obviously.
"My times were pretty quick for the first time out in a while which is good for my confidence ... and although the enduros are still a long way off but you can never get enough time in the car," he added.
Ford Rising Star Development Series racer James Moffat also reveled in the change of machinery today.
"Overall it was a worthwhile exercise today," Moffat said.
"I was driving my Norton 360 Falcon throughout the morning, then jumping in Richo's Dunlop Super Dealer FPR Falcon so I had plenty going on in my head with regards to trying to manage the different feedback required for each car," he added.
"My day was probably a little more disjointed than Luke's because it seemed like that every three or four laps I was driving a different car ... and most the time I was," Moffat joked.
FPR's full-time pilots Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards also spent some valuable time in the cockpit today, in preparation for this weekend's Ipswich 300.
While the duo battled some minor set-up issues, the day was a productive one with several positive changes made to the FPR Falcons.
Frosty and Richo finished today's practice sessions in 11th and 18th places respectively.
Qualifying and the opening 38-lap race will be held tomorrow ahead of a 65-lap race on Sunday.
