Ford Performance Racing endurace race co-driver John McIntyre has claimed the NZ SuperTourer Sprint title after his eighth place in Sunday’s race did enough to secure him the crown by just two points.
McIntyre will team up with Will Davison in the #6 Tradingpost FPR Ford for the Sandown 500 and Bathurst and was relieved his efforts were enough to overcome the deficit he had heading into the finale.
In a nail-biting final 35-lap race, the Nelson-based V8 driver said the championship title came down to being able to beat Paul Manuell by just two-tenths of a second to give him just enough advantage over Jonny Reid who headed the V8SuperTourers' points-table going into this fourth and final round at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park near Meremere south of Auckland.
The new champion will spend the series’ winter break preparing for the New Zealand V8 championship’s endurance rounds which start in September ensuring he will be race fit for the V8 Supercars’ own long distance races.
McIntyre’s team-mate and fellow FPR enduro driver Steve Richards finished 10th in the series after a series of dramas scuppered his chances of a high overall finish.
