23 | 08 | 2014 - CHAZ RAINS SUPREME

Ford Pepsi Max Crew’s Chaz Mostert has proved his wet weather credentials with a blistering drive in challenging conditions from 11th on the grid to second place in the final race of the day at Sydney Motorsport Park.

He picked his way through the field and up to third late in the race before making his main move at the final restart where he jumped series leader Jamie Whincup and almost overtook eventual race winner Shane van Gisbergen.

Chaz remained close to the Kiwi and finished less-than one second behind to claim his first ever runner-up place in V8 Supercars.

His team-mate was not as fortunate with title contender Frosty finishing 11th and 12th in both races after qualifying 17th in each.

He struggled for rear grip across the day but an inspired strategy in the first race saw a safety car pit stop vault him from the rear of the field to 11th.

“Pretty disappointing day really, the car just isn’t there, we’re just not quick enough. We tried to salvage something, Chaz looked like he did a good job, so it was nice to see him quick, but my car is just nowhere near it at the moment, so we need to tune it up and come again tomorrow and keep trying. It’s really frustrating when you’re in the pack, and it was pretty scary out there.”

“I was quite surprised to be up that far after qualifying so bad. In the first race we had no real pace at all but it was a big turnaround for the Ford Pepsi Max Crew. I am a bit over 12 months into the category now and it is awesome to follow these guys [Van Gisbergen and Whincup] around and try and pick up what they do so I can improve. I knew Jamie might’ve been thinking about the championship and I just had a really good restart after the final safety car. I stuck on the back of Shane but I couldn’t quite get him in the end. It was just fantastic to give him a nice hot run and hopefully it made good TV. I now have my first second place so I’ve completed the box set of podium places which is nice too.”

Tim Edwards – Team Principal:
“Today certainly threw everything at us and the conditions were about as difficult as they get. Chaz drove a brilliant second race and found significant improvements across the day so he is to be congratulated. It was a mature drive and he once again showed his class. It was a tougher day for the rest of the team but as always we’ll be thorough tonight and look to regroup and come out fighting tomorrow.”
