LIFE BEHIND THE LENS: SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK

04 | 09 | 2015 - LIFE BEHIND THE LENS: SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK

Life behind the lens is a series of articles that will take you behind the scenes with our multi-award winning photographers Mark Horsburgh and Scott Wensley from each V8 Supercars event. Mark and Scott will choose their favourite images from each event while explaining the process behind the shot and why it is significant to them. This time we take you behind the lens once again with Scott Wensley at the Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint.

Leading The Pack
Camera: Canon 1DX
Lens: 500mm f4
ISO: 400
Aperture: 6.3
Sutter Speed: 320th second
Scott: If the weather is on our side the late afternoon light is nice for photos as the cars head into turn one. I chose to use the wide angle when taking the photo so you can see right down the grid and also see the Sydney Motorsport Park sign. The inside of the track is a great place to shoot from at SMP as it provides some great angles.

Jubo
Camera: Canon 1DX
Lens: 70-200mm f2.8
ISO: 800
Aperture: f6.3
Sutter Speed: 250th second
Scott: Chaz celebrates after dominating the weekend and Sunday’s race at Sydney Motorsport Park. I was sure Chaz would get out of the car and look towards the crew, so I positioned myself on the pit wall to take grab the shot. Getting a good celebration shot is always pretty important. It was great to get the podium in the background as well to add some colour and also some context.

In the zone
Camera: Canon 1DX
Lens: 500mm f4
ISO: 400
Aperture: f5.6
Sutter Speed: 400th second
Scott: I decided to head over to the far side of the track near turns five and six for the last race on Saturday.  I was able to get elevated and shoot down on the cars, the tyre marks on the ground and the yellow line make for a nice shot. The angle that I have taken the photo at also gives the feel of the car turning. The contrast in the shot is also fantastic as the black of the track emphasise the colours in the car and also the yellow line on the track.

PRA through Trees
Camera: Canon 1DX
Lens: 500mm f4
ISO: 400
Aperture: f4
Sutter Speed: 250th second
Scott: At the end of the first race on Saturday I noticed the trees and thought it may look nice having the car positioned in the middle. The trees create a different looking photo, something that you normally wouldn't see in a photo of a car. The photo is quite dark overall but it creates a nice mood.

50meter
Camera: Canon 1DX
Lens: 500mm f4
ISO: 400
Aperture: f5.6
Sutter Speed: 500th second
Scott: After the cars come out of turn three at Sydney Motorsport Park they head down into turn four, hard on the brakes and then back on the loud pedal. I positioned myself to shoot the car and the 50 meter brake marker. In this shot you can really see just how hard these guys brake with the smoke coming off Chaz's front tyre and the angle that the car is on compared to the road. I also like that the 50 meter marker takes up a section of the photo and provides another focal point even though it is not in focus.
