17 | 06 | 2016 - HEAT DOMINATES OPENING DARWIN DAY

Prodrive Racing (Australia) has come through a tricky, yet trouble-free opening day at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin with some solid direction on set-up heading into Saturday’s race. Both hour-long sessions were punctuated with cars running off track as the field explored the limit and temperatures neared the mid-30 degree range. PRA’s quartet ran without incident and ultimately Chaz Mostert and Mark Winterbottom were the team’s top runners in ninth and 10th respectively – albeit only 0.1s off the ultimate pace. Cameron Waters marked his first full day in a Supercar in Darwin with constant improvement and if not for a small error on his green tyre run he would be in the top 10 with his team-mates. Fellow Darwin Supercar debutant Chris Pither enjoyed his first outings and despite yellow flags ruining his chance at a top time late in the day he was content with his efforts.

DRIVERS’ VIEW
Mark Winterbottom - #1 The Bottle-O PRA Ford:
10th – 1m06.79s
"We chipped away all day and will continue to do so in tomorrow morning’s practice session ahead of qualifying, but we’re not far off, even though it feels we are a long way off. We don’t need to find a lot of time, but we’ll have to work hard to make it up. We will give it a go tomorrow.”

Cameron Waters - #6 Monster Energy PRA Ford: 14th – 1m06.92s
"It was okay today. Practice one we weren’t happy with the car at all and made a few changes between sessions and made things quite a lot better. We had a green set of tyres at the end, though I dropped a wheel off which cost me 0.2s. Without that time loss it would’ve put me level with Chaz and Mark but at least we know we’re not far off. There’s a bit of time to find but we’ve made good gains across the day which is the main thing.”

Chaz Mostert - #55 Supercheap Auto PRA Ford: 9th – 1m06.78s
"The heat will make it an extremely hard weekend. I am pretty sure you’ll see some pretty tired drivers at the end of the weekend. In the first session we took a bit longer to make a change to the car than planned which hindered us a little bit. The car not too bad, but we are still missing a little bit. We’ll look over the data tonight and come up with some whizz-bang set-up that we need to find the time we’ve got to make up.”

Chris Pither - #111 Super Black PRA Ford: 21st – 1m07.16s
"It is my first time here at Hidden Valley in a Supercar and it’s a lot of fun, though I am disappointed where we ended up for the day on the new tyres. There were some yellow flags out on my hot lap which meant I couldn’t put it all together. We’ll go over everything tonight and see what we need but it isn’t much. I think we’ll be much stronger tomorrow.”

Tim Edwards – Team Principal:
"A solid yet unspectacular opening day in Darwin. Once everyone adjusted to the heat and got a bit of direction all four cars made gains and at the end there wasn’t much in it. Of course it is always close here at Hidden Valley so the gaps might be small, but we’ll need to work hard to close them and ensure we’re at the front and fighting for the win tomorrow.”
