HARD KNOCK LIFE IN THE TOP END

PRODRIVE RACING – DARWIN TRIPLE CROWN SUNDAY WRAP

Prodrive Racing (Australia) has endured its toughest race in recent history with Mark Winterbottom, Cam Waters and Chaz Mostert all getting involved in early-race incidents which forced multiple stops for repairs. Super Black Racing’s Chris Pither thankfully enjoyed a trouble-free day, rising from 24th to 11th by race end, but he was a rare shining light in a race punctuated by two lengthy safety car periods. Opening lap incidents caused significant front-end damage for Mostert who was an innocent victim when he was clipped by a spinning Fabian Coulthard. The contact wiped out the front-end of his Supercheap Auto machine and meant he spent the next 15-laps in the garage undergoing repairs. Waters’ endured another race with front corner damage and while far more basic when compared to his team-mate’s issues, it unusually occurred in the busy pit lane skirmish which followed the safety car being deployed to clean up the opening lap incidents. Winterbottom avoided the initial lap craziness but on the restart made heavy contact with Todd Kelly which forced him to pit for repairs and later to serve a penalty. While he would serve another penalty for contact in the closing laps, his chance at a high overall result were dashed. He finished 20th with Waters in 22nd and Mostert in 23rd.

Earlier in qualifying Mostert and Winterbottom made the Top 10 Shootout in another tight qualifying session. Mostert initially qualified third which only became eighth after his shootout lap as track temperatures penalised those out later in the session. Conversely Winterbottom turned a provisional eighth into a second row start with third, benefiting from the cooler track temperatures at the start of the shootout. Waters and Pither struggled for speed and missed the shootout ending up 23rd and 24th on the grid.

DRIVERS’ VIEW
Mark Winterbottom - #1 The Bottle-O PRA Ford
Qualifying:
8th
Shootout: 3rd
Race 13: 20th
"That was probably one of my worst efforts in a race car. The car was fast but it was hard to drive. At the restart it was unfortunate we made contact with Todd (Kelly). I tried to position myself but when he went defensive I tapped his rear guard and hit him in the worst spot possible. His rear end crumpled, as did my front end, and it was a shame for both of us. The incident at the end happened after I had been pushed off the track. I pushed back but got the penalty – it was bizarre. I am not going to be pushed around. I take responsibility for the first penalty as I unfortunately wrecked (Todd’s) race. But I don’t agree with the second one.”

Cameron Waters - #6 Monster Energy PRA Ford
Qualifying:
23rd
Race 13: 22nd
"It wasn’t a very good weekend at all. I don’t really know what to say. It was a weekend where nothing went to plan. In today’s race when I pitted the whole lane was blocked. I thought there was more room than there was and I managed to clip Garth (Tander) and broke another upright. I am massively disappointed for the crew as they did an awesome job all weekend and to get me back out again was fantastic. Our race pace was okay when we got going but unfortunately it was too late by then.”

Chaz Mostert - #55 Supercheap Auto PRA Ford
Qualifying:
3rd
Shootout: 8th
Race 13: 23rd
"It was a tough day today. We qualified well in the first part and then to go into the top 10 and be one of the last cars out put us back due to the track conditions. In the race I had a bad start and got caught up in the fight. We were lucky not to write-off a car. I didn’t know it was three-wide and I stayed as wide as I could but I was just a passenger when the crash happened. However, if that race showed anything it is that we have a great bunch of people on the team that don’t give up. They worked hard and got me back out to get some points. I am sure those points will help us out as the year goes on. It was great to get a podium yesterday but Sunday just wasn’t our day.”

Chris Pither - #111 Super Black PRA Ford
Qualifying:
24th
Race 13: 11th
"I was disappointed with the qualifying position as the aim was to be better than yesterday but we weren’t. I had confidence in the race we would be quick over a stint and thankfully I avoided all the carnage at the start. I came out unscathed and set myself from there. It was hectic in the first round of stops but I had perfect service and it got me back out there in a great position. We pushed on and got a good result so I am happy for the Super Black Racing team.”

Tim Edwards – Team Principal:
"Today was a day we would rather forget but it was pretty much over before it even began with so many incidents on the opening lap and during that first safety car period. Chris bucked the trend, avoided the chaos and should be pleased with his drive but it just wasn’t our day otherwise. Chaz was caught up in someone else’s accident, while Cam was one of many to make contact in the lane but paid a high price. Frosty’s day uncharacteristically went from bad to worse. We’ll quickly put it behind us and look to Townsville for redemption.”
